Black Orchid Celebrates the Holidays With Creole Food and Music
The Black Orchid Resort located outside of the village of Burrell Boom in Belize has announced a special holiday celebration. Focusing on the unique Creole culture, Black Orchid will feature a delicious array of Creole food and live performances by some of Belize’s top Creole bands.
On Sunday, December 18, 2016, at 12:00 noon, Brads Patico and his band will be the featured performer at the Pan Di Riva Restaurant and Bar located on the premises of the Black Orchid Resort. Described as a “bruk down” (Creole for “breakdown”) jam, the event will be repeated on Sunday, Christmas Day, December 25, 2016, at 12:00 noon with a delicious Creole brunch and a New Year’s Eve dinner dance at 8:30 PM on Saturday, December 31, 2016, that will continue into the early morning hours of 2017.
There is no cover charge for the December 18 and December 25 brook down jams, but the restaurant and bar will be open for lunch. The charge for the New Year’s event is $50 and includes dinner. All of the special presentations are open for both guests of the resort and members of the public.
Creole music is a mixture of European harmonies, African rhythms, and call-and-response formats influenced by Caribbean genres. Traditional Creole instruments include the accordion, donkey’s jawbone, banjo, guitar, and drums. Creole food traditions include rice and beans, stewed chicken, fresh seafood, fish, lobster, conch, potatoes, plantains, potatoes, and more exotic game meats like iguana and gibnut.
“Located in the predominately Creole village of Burrell Boom, we’re looking forward to giving guests and visitors a chance to experience authentic Creole culture,” said Douglas Thompson, managing director of Black Orchid Resort. “We have organized these events as a way to help celebrate the holidays and ring in the new year with plenty of good food, music, and cheer.”
